A Community-Controlled, Cooperatively-Owned Grocery Store in Cherry Hill

The Cherry Hill Food Co-op will be a grocery store that is owned and operated by the residents of Cherry Hill and south Baltimore for the benefit of our community. This effort is a response to our community’s long-sustained, popular demand for a store that will provide us with high quality food options. All members of the food co-op will democratically determine how our store is governed. Our mission is rooted in principles of black land and food sovereignty.

Our Vision

We are building a community in South Baltimore where Black people are in control of our food economy so that we can build collective freedom, wealth and health.

Our Mission

Our mission is to establish a community-owned cooperative grocery store that provides healthy, affordable and culturally-appropriate foods while serving as an incubator for community development in pursuit of Black control of food and land.

For over 15 years, the Cherry Hill community has been without a major grocery store. For the past 40 years, the Baltimore community has been without a major, community-owned enterprise. The Cherry Hill Food Co-op is being formed to improve access to healthy, affordable, and culturally appropriate foods and will regenerate and maintain resources in south Baltimore. It will increase the amount of healthy foods available and provide opportunities for income and business ownership for Cherry Hill residents.

Community Control

The people who work and shop at the co-op will be its owners. Together, we will democratically determine how the grocery store is operated, ensuring that all key decisions will be made by and for community members.

Healthy & Affordable Food

Living in an area that doesn’t offer healthy and affordable food harms our community. This market will provide access to real, nutritious food, making our community healthier and stronger.

Collective Economic Strength

The food co-op will benefit our economy by sourcing products locally, creating jobs, providing space for local entrepreneurs and training members in sustainable business development.
